 via Project Rolling Freedom

So last weekend I made some deodorant/antiperspirant.  It’s AWESOME and I’m never going back to store bought cancer in a stick ever again!  For those of you using baking soda, be sure and check the label because baking soda does contain aluminum and you’ll be defeating the purpose of making your own if you use it.  You can get aluminum-free baking soda at your health food store or the one I work at (I’ll even ship it to ya!)

So here’s the recipe.  I melted the coconut oil in order to get it all mixed thoroughly, then I put it in the fridge to set up. I also used a little less coconut oil and threw a little shea butter in it.  And because I don’t like the smell of tea tree oil, I used about 15 drops of bitter almond, and 5 drops each of ginger, clove and cinnamon essential oils.  The cinnamon, ginger and clove are just as effective at killing bacteria as the tea tree oil and you won’t smell like medicated lotion all day.  Most essential oils have  bacteria killing properties so just use your favorite smell.

  • 1/4c. aluminum-free baking soda
  • 1/4c. cornstarch
  • 5tbsp coconut oil (solid at room temperature like Spectrum Naturals)
  • 15-30 drops of your favorite essential oil.
  • Mix all ingredients thoroughly and either pour or pack into a deodorant container

Also, here’s one that is just essential oils and butters.  It wouldn’t be a very good antiperspirant but with thyme, rosemary and lavender essential oils, it would be simply amazing at killing smelly bacterias

1 1/2 tbsp beeswax (yellow is best)
1/2 tbsp cocoa butter
1 tbsp coconut oil
15 drops white thyme essential oil
15 drops rosemary essential oil
25 drops lavender essential oil

What is Organic

The FDA has changed the way organic has been listed off and on for years so do you really know what they mean by Organic?

An “organic” label indicates a product consisting of at least 95% organically-produced ingredients: denotes processed products containing a minimum of 70%  organic ingredients. A soup made with 70% organic ingredients and only organic vegetables, for example, cannot use the USDA seal but may be labeled “made with organic vegetables.”

On the other hand, a product labeled “natural,” like “natural beef,” indicates no chemical additives have been added after the animal is slaughtered. It does not, however, restrict additives used beforehand. The animal can be pumped full of hormones, grown on a farm with pesticides, herbicides and toxic fertilizers, and still display a “natural” label. A cow eating genetically engineered corn can be labeled ‘natural beef’ if no additive was added after packaging. ‘Natural’ beef is profoundly different from organically grown beef.”

Within the past 30 years organic has grown from a small-farm movement to a major industry in which organic foods and products can be found on the shelves of major retailers.

Me I have always tried to pick the best of organics and know the company’s. If I do not know then I do my research , call the company’s to ask them questions. Best way I know how to get the answers I am looking for. They seem to be very willing to help .http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Search/Search_Results/Index.asp?q=defining+organic&mode=simple&num=10&as_occt=any&site=FSIS,http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Search/Search_Results/Index.asp?q=regulations+and+policies+for+organic&mode=simple&num=10&as_occt=any&site=FSIS&btnG.x=15&btnG.y=11

Check out the 100 healthiest foods! www.dwlz.com/HealthyLife/healthy50.html

I enjoyed reading this one.  It has fat/calorie breakdown and body benefits and most of my favorite foods are listed. The only issue that I have would be that the foods need to be organic. We are coming up on gardening season and there’s nothing more rewarding than when you gather your own organic produce and taste the freshness of your labors.

If you want to grow your own 100 healthiest foods check out your local green houses for the new seeds available. I was told this is the best time of the year. Recipe via Lelly at www.projectrollingfreedom.com

I wear mascara. If I don’t, my eyes look like two pea holes in the snow. I love my mascara and it is the one unneccessary item that I can’t bring myself to part with.  It defines my eyes and makes the sparkle stand out.  I’ve had a minimalist beauty regimin for many years now. However, I don’t really like the chemicals that are in my mascara. Or the fact that the tubes and wands aren’t recyclable and every time I need a new tube, the old one has to go in the garbage.  So I’ve decided to try making my own

This recipe is for plain ol’ black mascara. I’m sure there are ways to make different colors but I’m comfortable with black.

Ingredients:

  • Sterilized mascara tube and wand
  • Pigment. You could use activated charcoal (available at healthfood stores). WARNING: Do NOT use regular charcoal. It WILL irritate your eyes. Activated charcoal has been buffered and broken down so that it’s not so caustic.
  • A base for the mascara. You could use: vegetable oil, vegetable glycerine, or water.  I personally would use the vegetable glycerine.  It works as a humectant and will moisturize your lashes. Also, if you would like you mascara to be a little more solid, you could add a little beeswax to the mixture.
  • A preservative. You could use vitamin E, liquid grapefruit seed extract, sugar, or colloidal silver.
  • In a small container, mix your ingredients. For the preservative, you only need a little. For example; one drop of grapefruit seed extract should take care of 1 tube of mascary. Add your pigment a little at a time until you reach the desired color. Pour your mixture into your sterilized mascara tube. Voila! You have your home made mascary!
Ok so here is the disclaimer. I am not responsible in any way, shape or form for what happens to you if you make and/or use this product.  I am not a professional cosmetics creator and should not be considered as such.  If you have questions, do some research.

Quality of Brands

Generally, as products go, we have always checked out all the brands we carry to make sure the quality was there. As of late, the fish oil makers being sued over PCB compounds in the products.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in San Francisco Supreme Court, claims that the makers and sellers of certain supplements found to contain high levels of PCB compound (man-made industrial chemicals) have failed to alert consumers as required under California’s right-to-know law.

The Mateel Environmental Justice Foundation, one of three named plaintiffs, tested 10 fish oil supplements out of more than 100 on the market. The other plaintiffs in the case are New Jersey residents.

Defendants include the world’s largest producer of omega-3 fish oil, Houston-based Omega Protein, as well as drug stores Rite Aid Corp and CVS Caremark Corp.

“The people buying these fish oil supplements are not being told the PCBs are there” said plaintiff’s attorney David Roe.

People consume fish oil supplements for the health benefits obtained from omega-3 fatty acids, but there are currently no standards for PCB contamination in the United States, according to Roe.

Also named as defendants are General Nutrition Corp, a subsidiary of GNC Acquisition Holdings Corp, Now Health Group Inc, Pharmavite LLC, the maker of the NatureMade brand of supplements, Solgar Inc and TwinLab Corp.

Pharmavite LLC also has other brands SoyJoy, Olay Brand

If you are worried about the content of PCB’s in your fish oil, come by the store and check out Nordic Naturals.  That company has always had third-party testing for the quality of products. They are a wonderful company with high quality products we have carried them for many years. You can visit there web site at www.nordicnaturals.com

We also carry fish oil by Carlson Lab. Carlson’s is another favorite of ours!

They are back to the attack of our right to choose supplements or drugs.

Senator John McCain has introduced the desperately misguided Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010 (DSSA). Co-sponsored by Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and backed by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and various professional and amateur sports organizations, this bill aims to identify and remove illegal steroid products from the legitimate dietary supplement marketplace. This bill will NOT achieve its goal but will severely harm our industry. In short, their solution in dealing with a  criminal element is to add even more laws for them to ignore- the real solution is to enforce the adequate laws that we currently have on the books!

As written, this bill would repeal essential sections of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA)- this is the very threat that we have been predicting could become a reality. This bill would create a regulatory climate similar to the one we face in Canada that has resulted in thousands of natural products being removed from the marketplace.

This is a misguided bill which we will need to respond to very vigorously in order to protect our industry and the health freedoms of people who use natural products. While this is a very serious threat, I am encouraged because- as in 1994- I know that we have the truth on our side. We need your help to ensure the truth is heard in Congress by having the voice of the people bring it to them. It’s time to speak out because silence is acceptance!

Please contact your congressman and voice your concerns. Thanks to you wonderful people of the United States we have rights. It is up to us.

NO SURRENDER, NO RETREAT!!!!!!!!!!!

I read this article about five years ago and the effects on the body. I was thinking maybe I should pass this on.

Do you know how many foods MSG is found in? Many, when it comes right down to it.

In hundreds of studies around the world scientists were creating obese mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies. No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so the scientists have to create them. They make these morbidly obese creatures by injecting them with MSG when they are first born. The MSG triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates; causing rats (and humans?) to become obese. They even have a title for the fat rodents they create : “MSG-Treated Rats”.

Most all prepared foods contain this product. It has many names to look for Hydrolyzed vegetable protein or monosodium glutamate or MSG are the most common. Other names are Accent ,Aginomoto, Natural meat tenderizer.

Go to the National Library of Medicine, at http://www.pubmed.com type in the words “MSG Obese” and read a few of the medical studies that appear.

Hello world!

This is DC Natural Foods in Idaho Falls, Id. Been here in the same location since 1957. We carry vitamins, minerals, herbs bulk and capsules, protein powders ,cosmetics and organic foods. Mail orders and phone orders are welcome 208-522-6964.  We have branched out of the old school into the new so here we go.

I love to read and research all about health and with the wonderful staff we have we can come up with the most creative ways to solve problems. So anything you need looked up we would love to help.

Right now we would like to take a minute of your time and discuss B-complex. I truly believe this is the most important thing we can take.

They (the b-complex) function as a co-enzyme in the metabolism of all three basic nutrients: proteins, carbohydrates, and oils. As an extension of this function, b-complex is essential to the process of cell reproduction. It works to synthesize the amino acids which form body protein and the nucleic acids which combine to form the DNA and RNA of each cell nucleus. They take part in every organ, gland, tissue, muscle and any other part of the body you can think of!

Our staff recommends our very own DC Natural Foods brand B-Complexes. If you have never taken a B-complex before, we suggest starting out with a B-50 complex. With 50 milligrams of each of the B’s you can be confident that you’re getting what you need. Plus B vitamins are water-soluble so it is VERY hard to get too much. In our store, whenever we feel fatigued after a super busy month, we take our B’s several times a day to help feed our livers and our glandular systems.
